In a rare development, a private hospital in Jharkhand came across a case – where a 21-day-old infant was found carrying eight foetuses in her womb.
After the baby was born, the doctors discovered a lump in the abdomen, and they advised the parents to get it operated on at once.
During the procedure, doctors found that foetuses ranging from three to five centimetres in size were settled inside a cyst in the abdomen.
About the rare medical condition
Fetus-in-fetu (FIF) is a rare medical condition – where one malformed vertebrae foetus is enclosed within the body of its twin.
Talking to the Times of India, Dr Mohammed Imran said that FIF is known to occur in one in five lakh live births.
Claiming that this case could be the first in the world, he added, “International medical journals have recorded one foetus in most of the FIF cases. I have never found so many foetuses in a newborn till now.”
Baby’s condition reported normal.
The baby was born on October 10 in a government hospital in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district.
As per doctors, the baby had to be admitted to the hospital when the diagnosis revealed a cyst or tumour-like substance in the baby’s womb.
The operation that took place on November 1 turned out to be successful, and the baby was reported to be in normal condition.
