A medical college in Uttarakhand’s Srinagar has suspended seven MBBS students of the 2019 batch after they allegedly ragged juniors by making them strip in the cold in Dehradun.

As per a TOI report, the incident happened on November 11 at the Vir Chandra Singh Garhwali Government Institute of Medical Science and Research hostel.

Parents contacted college authorities

The seniors covered their faces to avoid getting identified before forcing juniors to strip on the hostel terrace.

The incident came to light when one of the students’ parents intimated the college authorities, following which the rest of the juniors came forward to narrate their ordeal.

Incident was probed ‘at various levels’

A panel was set up the following day by the institute authorities to look into the matter and found that the facts shared by the juniors were true.

Principal of the medical college, CMS Rawat said, “The matter was probed at various levels.”

He revealed that 30-40 juniors’ written statements were taken into account and cross-checked.

“The seven students in question have had disciplinary issues in the past. Some of their conversations with juniors were also collected. After connecting all the dots, the committee came out with its findings and action was taken,” Rawat said.

He further said the seven students would be barred from all academic sessions for the next three months.

“…the committee will conduct a behavioural assessment before they are allowed to resume their studies in the medical college.”

Rawat said.

The principal also assured juniors from the new batches wouldn’t be troubled.

“This is a clear message for all students. Such activities cannot be tolerated. The new batch has just joined and anyone found harassing a junior won’t be spared,” he proclaimed.

Criminal case in Hyderabad B-school ragging case

In a separate incident, a criminal case of ragging and assault of a first-year student at ICFAI Business School in Hyderabad led to notices being sent to the registrar, two professors, two hostel wardens and four more college employees on Monday.

Previously, a dozen law undergrads were suspended, and eight of them were arrested on Saturday after the 19-year-old BBA-LLB freshman registered an FIR. In the complaint, he stated that a group of students stormed into his hostel room on November 1 and assaulted him.
