48 Vehicles Get Piled Up After Being Hit By Truck On Pune-Bengaluru Highway; At Least 30 Injured

In a major accident at the Navale bridge on the Pune- Bengaluru highway on Sunday evening, a tanker crashed into several vehicles resulting in a 48-vehicle pile up, a Pune Fire Brigade official said.

At least 30 persons have suffered injuries in the incident and they are being treated at two hospitals, the official told news agency PTI.

Rescue teams at spot

Rescue teams from the Pune fire brigade and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority reached the spot. In photos from the massive pile-up, several cars can be seen mangled.     

“A major road accident occurred at Navale bridge on the Pune-Bengaluru highway in Pune in which about 48 vehicles got damaged. Rescue teams from the Pune Fire Brigade and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) have reached the spot,” the official said.

Truck lost control

A police official said a tanker lost control and hit the car. As the accident took place on the downward slope of the bridge and oil spilled onto the road, around 48 other cars got damaged.

The accident occurred either due to suspected brake failure of the truck or the driver lost control. The truck from Andhra Pradesh was going from Satara to Mumbai. 

The incident took place around 8:30pm in an area of about 400 to 500 metres, reports said. The accident has led to traffic congestion on the road to Mumbai with jams over 2 km long being reported.
