A 20-year-old Delhi University student died and four of his friends were injured allegedly after their SUV collided with a metro pillar in Greater Noida on Friday.
According to the police, they were returning from a wedding function when the accident happened.
The victim, identified as Ansh Swaroop, a resident of Kalyanpuri area of Delhi, was a student at Delhi University.
SUV was overspeeding
“The five students had come to Greater Noida for a wedding function. They were returning to Delhi in a Mahindra Scorpio which apparently collided with a metro pillar between Pari Chowk and the Alpha 1 metro station around 3.30 am,” a police official said.
According to the official, the damages to the front portion of the car indicate that it could have been at a high speed at the time of the crash.
The incident took place in the Beta 2 police station area.
The police said they have not got any complaint for probe into the case from anyone and those who were injured.
Police said Swaroop died before reaching the hospital, while those injured, identified as Pulkit, Nishant, Priyanshu and Dev Agarwal were discharged from the hospital after some hours.
High speed – biggest cause of accidents
According to a traffic police official, the high speed of vehicles is a major contributor to road crashes in Noida and Greater Noida in the Gautam Buddh Nagar district of UP, adjoining Delhi.
Police data showed that over 350 people have lost their lives this year in road crashes across the district which recorded over 900 accidents in which another 700 people suffered injuries.
Youths try to run over cop
Earlier this week, Noida Police had arrested three youths, all natives of Delhi, for trying to run over a traffic cop when he tried to stop them from jumping the signal.
According to the Noida Police, the four men were drunk and were travelling in a Mahindra Thar.
They were arrested on Wednesday and charged with attempt to murder, rash driving and hurting a public servant to prevent him from carrying out his duty.
Woman killed by speeding car
On Sunday, a 24-year-old woman was killed after a luxury car rammed her two-wheeler and flung her in the air for a few seconds before she landed on the road.
The woman, identified as Deepika Tripathi, worked as a receptionist and was the family’s sole breadwinner.
The speeding Jaguar XKR sports car worth over Rs 1 crore, with VIP number plate (0001), was driven by one Samuel Andrew Pyster, an American Express Bank employee.
